Founded in 2009 by Forrest Li, the company initially started as Garena, a digital entertainment platform, before expanding into e-commerce and financial services. In 2017, the company rebranded to Sea Limited to reflect its broader business portfolio.
Sea operates three major businesses:

- Shopee – One of Southeast Asia's largest e-commerce platforms.
- Monee (formerly SeaMoney) – Digital payments, lending, and financial services solutions.
